Are You Desperate?

Desperation takes on many faces, depending on what we are desperate for. If our physical person is desperate for a certain food, like ice cream, we will do what it takes to find it! If our soul longs desperately for something or someone, even if it is wrong, we find a way to make it happen. Our body helps to drive this desperation too.

What if we were desperate in our spirit, that part of who we are, for all the right things? How can we get desperate and stay desperate to stay away from those things that so easily snare us - those cravings in our body and soul?

In our desperation, we look for satisfaction, but in our pursuit, we realize what we filled our longings with is temporary at the least, and at the worst is really bad for us. How do we spin out of the endless cycle of bad desperation? We must change our focus.

It’s proven that people don’t change until they get desperate and the level of desperation is different for everyone. My desperation came in stages. First, I became frustrated that what I was doing was not working. Then disappointed that I could not seem to change. Then almost hopeless that there must be something wrong with me. All of this might have been true at the moment until I realized I was going in the wrong direction and desperate for the wrong thing.

I walked the path well taken, talking to others, laughing along the way, and wondering where others were when they disappeared. I turned around a few times to go back, but again others pulled me back to walk with them. This happened over and over until I walked to a place where I saw a cross.

I Corinthians 1:18 - for the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Jesus was crucified between two thieves. I asked myself which one am I? Am I the haughtily and prideful one or the one who saw his sin and wanted to be with Jesus? At that point I decided I was desperate to follow the path of Jesus and others could come if they wanted to.

Even on the narrow path of God’s Way, I became weary and wanted others to help me carry my cross as I followed Jesus. Others obliged and the burden became lighter. Little by little, compromise entered my life, and not realizing what happened, I grew very thirsty.

Luke 14-27 - Whoever does not persevere and carry his own cross and come after (follow) Me cannot be My disciple.

Have you ever trained for a run? I have trained for many in my life from a 1-mile to a marathon. Tanking up on water before, during, and after the race is essential or you will become desperate for water. Not doing what you know to do will drive you to do what you know to do. I got back on the path and picked up my own cross.

My new-found desperation placed my focus on Jesus, and His obedience to die on the cross. His love shown through His sacrifice on the cross. My sins forgiven because of the cross. His blood spilled at the foot of the cross, on the backside of the cross, and on His body on the cross. This. This makes me desperate to know Jesus more every day.

You can read in our daily devotion, The G.L.U.E. more about the cross on these dates: January 18, March 12, and June 13.

Share some of your insights about your desperation. My prayer for you is that you become desperate for the One who is desperate for you.

Until next time, remember, the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.
