Lost or Found
The Bible clearly says that we are lost without God. It tells us that we can only be found in Christ. I want to talk about 3 kinds of lost (loss), when something or someone is lost. Then when we depend on God, He will always show us where to find it and how to be found.
Three Scenarios of Something Lost and Something Found.
1. Have you lost something and you go to the lost and found table hoping to find the item you've lost?
It is especially common in schools where children leave things. The teacher picks it up and puts it in the “found” box. But it is only found by the teacher, not the one that lost it. The item joins the other ‘found’ items and makes its way to the bottom as it falls into the box. A note is sent to parents to come and look in the box for things their child might have lost. For us adults, the most common things we lose are keys and wallets. We get down the road and realize our driver’s license is at home or we are trying to get down the road once we find our keys.
2. Have you been on a road trip using the GPS or maps and you made a wrong turn, following the GPS, and now you’re lost?
This frustrates you but you try again, using the same tool but, again, it doesn't work. How many times has this happened to me? You may talk to someone on the phone and they try to give you directions. You say, “That’s OK, I will use my GPS.” You hang up and get on the road. This happened to me when trying to find a location in Dallas, Texas. Evidently, the business had moved and forgot to inform Google. And if I had stayed on the phone, they would have told me, “It’s not on Google Maps yet.”
3. Have you ever been in a situation (or known someone) that was either tragic or traumatic or both?
You experienced the loss of someone or something. You needed and wanted someone to show you the way back, someone just to come and put their arms around you and tell you it’s going to be Okay. Eventually with that care and love you find your way back to a place that you were before, but it’s a better place. This seems like a great mystery when in reality it is a spiritual principle.
Finally…pride will keep us from knowing that we are lost and need to be found. I didn't know I needed to be found but God did. Jesus found me at a youth camp. The young director sang a song on his guitar. Just a simple hymn that drew my heart which was lost. My life has never been the same.
Yes, I’ve been lost again but not that way. Once you’re found by the Lord God you won't ever be lost again. He holds you in the fold of his arms. He hugs you, comforts you, and guides you. The Holy Spirit brings great comfort in a way that only He can and it's almost unexplainable. I have friends, maybe you do too, that get really upset when they lose their keys, their wallet, or their way on the road. God is involved in those details as much as He is in the loss of a friend or loved one.
I have been a believer in Jesus for over 50 years. In these 50 years, I have lost my keys, my phone, my friends, and my way. No matter what I have lost and the gravity of it, He always finds me, brings me comfort, and sets me in a place, better than before.
Where the GPS can fail when we are lost, God’s GPS never will. It is God’s Position Sensor – always putting you in the right place at the right time. When you feel lost or have lost something or someone, you can trust that Holy Spirit will cause you to be found.
One perfect example is Joseph in the OT. Read chapters 37-50 to get the fullness of what Joseph lost and how he was found by God. God did it for him and He will do it for you.
