Remember Me

Most Christians see these words and instantly think of Jesus saying this to His disciples in the upper room as they entered into a new covenant. Jesus broke bread, passed it around, and asked His disciples to do the same. Next, He passed a cup of wine around. He knew what He was about to face. They did not. His words, remember me, came in the upper room, not on the cross.

Have you ever asked yourself, “How did Jesus endure the torture, the beatings, and the nailing to the cross? He spoke seven phrases while hanging on the cross. He held a brief conversation with a man hanging next to Him. He cried out with a loud voice as He gave up His Spirit to His Father.

I pondered this recently and the Lord reminded me of the angel that visited Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus sweat drops of blood. In one Gospel account, He went back and forth three times to pray and check on the disciples. The thought of the pain He was about to endure, physically, mentally, and spiritually was more than He could endure as a man. We are reminded in Colossians 2:6-8 that Jesus laid aside His divinity. He faced the most excruciating form of death in His day as a man.

The no-name angel that came to Him in the garden, refreshed Him, much like Gabrial did for Daniel. This angel helped Jesus make it to the end. This reminded me of at least 3 times, probably more, where unseen and sometimes seen, God sent an angel to help me when I needed it most.

1.     My most recent encounter happened overseas. While trekking up part of the Himalayas, about halfway to our destination, my body ‘gave out’. Between the thin air and the climb, my legs and lungs almost collapsed. I asked the team to stop for just a minute. No one knew the fight going on within my body. I bent over, breathing deeply, and prayed, “Lord, I need your help. Send me an angel to refresh me, give me the supernatural energy I need to finish this climb.” I raised up slowly, trusting He would answer my prayer. Not only did we make it all the way up, but also made it back down before dark!

2.     A not-so-recent event, found me running a marathon in San Diego with my girls. We were among thousands of runners who trained for the event. The gun went off and we were off. Hours later as we crossed the finish line, we made our way up and in a building prepared for us. Shortly after, without notice, I found myself sliding down a wall, my body was shutting down and I prayed, “Help, Lord!” Yes, we trained for months, but in the end, I needed a supernatural refreshing just to get up!

3.     Several times, I with others have faced near death auto accidents. The one that stands out happened while going through an intersection. When approaching the intersection our light was green in our lane, but as I traveled through the intersection, traffic from the opposite direction headed our way.  I felt hands come over me and take the wheel. It was a miracle that we were not all in a bad accident. I seemed as if we were transparent land miraculously made it through.

Now, I tell these short stories to show how Jesus needed supernatural help in His greatest time of need. That same supernatural help is available to us. Angels were involved in every part of Jesus’ life. They are available to us as well. Not to worship, nor to quiz, but to commission them to work for us in ways we cannot work for ourselves. Hebrews 1:14 says, “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” It is a rhetorical question. The answer is within the question.

—————————————-

Do you think Jesus wants us to know more about the cross? The cross was the action to remember, but communion in the upper room bonded them to each other. His relationship with His Father, full of trust, would bring him back to life and seat Him at the right hand of His Father where one day they would join Him. If they didn’t forget.

Raised as a Baptist girl, I remember singing, “At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light…Where I first saw the light.

Some years ago, I had a dream where Jesus beckoned me to let go and go with Him to a place He wanted to show me. As we climbed a hill, I could see three crosses in the distance. I turned to look at Him and He said, “I want to teach you more about the cross.

If you don’t think we need to know more about the cross, consider this story. After the death of Jesus, with his tomb empty, the disciples huddled in an upper room. They feared what might happen next. Two disciples decided to travel to Emmaus, seven miles away. While on their way, they encountered someone along the way who tagged along, aka Jesus. Yet, these two, Cleopas and possibly Simon the Zealot, did not recognize Him until the breaking of bread (Luke 24:34-35).  Immediately Jesus vanished

The breaking of the bread, the drinking of the wine, and Jesus saying do this in remembrance of Me took place before the cross. Jesus wanted them to remember Him, to remember His words, to remember His ways, to remember His great love for them.

Until next time, remember, the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.
