Who Are You?

Spirit, Soul, Body - The whole of who you are!

Below are some Scriptures to help you see yourself as a spirit made in God’s image!

We are a spirit, made in God’s image – Genesis 1:26

We have a soul – mind, will, emotions – Matthew 22:37

We live in a body – our earth suit while on earth that houses our spirit and soul until death. – Galatians 2:20

I Thessalonians 5:23 – gives the framework for man being a tripart being. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Spirit

Romans 8:16 – This is how we know we are children of God – The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then joint heirs with Christ.

Luke 6:43-45 – for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered (understood).

Romans 8:26 -The Spirit of God helps us know how and what to pray for. Likewise, the Spirit also helps with our weaknesses

Matthew 12:33-37 – Jesus is speaking to the crowd which includes Pharisees, purposing to give them the spiritual formula because they are following a soulish one. Don’t say one thing and do another, you are known by your fruit. Watch what you say, it is idle if you do not mean it in your heart to do it.

I Corinthians 2:9-11 - it is revealed to us by God’s Spirit. We can know the things of God by His Spirit.

John 3:6 – tells us, That which is born of the flesh is flesh, that which is born of Spirit is spirit – this is why we must be ‘born again.’

John 4:24 – God IS Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Romans 12:3 -Everyone has an opportunity to be ‘born again’. For I say, though the grace given me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

Soul

Genesis 2:7 – God breathed into man’s nostrils the living breath, and man became a living soul.

How do we distinguish between spirit and soul?

Hebrews 4:12 – The Word of God is able to divide between the spirit of man, the soul of man, and the fleshly (carnal) desires. For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. This is how Jesus knew the hearts of men – He discerned it by His Father’s word. We can do the same.

We are to renew our mind – Romans 12:2 – And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

We are to yield our will – Luke 22:42 – nevertheless, not my will but Yours be done.

We are to give over our emotions – Philippians 4:5-8 – Paul’s instructions that emanate from our feelings/emotions ending with, Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of a good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy meditate on these things.

Romans 7-8 think of how Paul is struggling, but yields his spirit to Jesus to overcome the other parts of his being, soul, and body.

There are many Scriptures putting off and putting on. For example:

Colossians 3:5-17 Put off and put on…If you were raised with Christ (crucifying the old nature – risen with the new nature – born again) then seek those things that are above (heavenly, spiritual). Set your mind on these things, not on things on the earth. People say, “Oh, you are so heavenly-minded you are no earthy good.” but God says, “If you are not heavenly-minded, you can be of no earthly good.”

Galatians 5:19 – lists the works of the flesh that manifest in the body and through the soul. It is a long list. This is where demons work in our souls.

Galatians 5:22,23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law. Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit, the character of God, and manifested on the earth in the life of Jesus. Others will know us by our fruit.

Body

It is a command. Present your bodies a living sacrifice – Romans 12:1

I Corinthians 6:19 – Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God and you are not your own? What a revelation that God’s Spirit dwells in the believer’s spirit. The Spirit of God and man’s reborn spirit lead and guide the body to do the things of God.

v.20 – we were bought with a price. That price of course is the life and blood of Jesus.

Galatians 5:13 – we have been freedom in Christ, let us not us our freedom for an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. I say then, Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh, for the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh.

I Corinthians 3:16 – Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

I Corinthians 10:31 – Therefore (look to see what is before) whatever you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

I Timothy 4:8 – for bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having the promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

We are 3 parts, like God is triune, but we are connected by our spirit to God’s spirit and this affects everything we do and say.

Remember the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart!
