What Is Truth?

What is TRUTH? This question can be found in the New Testament. As Jesus stood before Pilot for the last time, accused by the Jewish leaders of His day, Pilot asked the same question to Jesus as he cross-examined Jesus. In John 18:37, Pilot said to Jesus, Are you a king then? Jesus answered you say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born and for this cause, I have come into this world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice!! Pilot said to Him, “What is truth?”

The Source of Truth is God Himself, manifested through Jesus’ words I am Truth. Maybe you have said or have heard others say. “That’s the truth” as they try to verify something. This could be known as factual truth. We know that facts can change but truth never changes.

Truth is more than principles that we live by, it is more than the character of God. It is who God is based in Love. It is a descriptive way to describe something, but more than that it is Who God is and His Word is based on that Truth. In John chapter 1 we read that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. John tells us that Jesus was with God in the beginning as the Word and they are in oneness. God sent Himself, as His Son, to the earth as a man to show truth to His creation, all of mankind. The truth is made known to all who will believe.

The word truth in the New Testament Greek is alaythia and it means, verily, truly, verity, truth. Sometimes there is no other word to describe the word except to use the word itself.

More than a dozen times in the book of John truth is mentioned and it always refers to Jesus. John is not only referring to Jesus’ words and His ways but to Who He is.

Let’s look at an acronym for truth. Maybe you can think of different words to fill in the letters. I am sure there are more to be explored. This is not earth-shattering, but words that speak to my heart throughout my life about the God of Truth who I love and serve.

T – Trust your Creator, His Word, His Will, and His ways. So many people in my life have not been truthful, thus I found it hard to trust. But God! He is not only always truthful, but trustworthy!

R – Righteousness through the blood of Jesus. There is no ‘rightness’ in me due to my sin, but Jesus died so that I could live a guiltless life in His righteousness. I am washed in the blood of Jesus!

U – Unity or oneness with God through Jesus. We read about this in Jesus’ prayer in John 17. Through God’s Spirit, we are one with God through Jesus.

T – Transformation. I was one way and now I am another, to borrow a line from The Chosen TV show. I was in total darkness, doomed to hell. Yet, now transformed in the light of Life through my faith in Jesus. Behold all things are new, I am a new creation, not remade, but made in the image of Christ.

H – Holy. Yes, holy are you, Lord. Yet, Jesus said for us to be holy as He is holy. That is entirely possible through our life in Christ. We embrace who He is and holiness abides in us.

And that is the Truth.

Until next time remember, the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.
